I had the the privilege to be invited to one of the preliminary tasting of Franco Martinetti's wines in Hong Kong, held by his son Michele Martinetti at the marvellous @toscadiangelo at @ritzcarltonhongkong.

Franco starts producing wines in 1974, exactly 50 years ago. By aiming for the utmost quality and looking to make wines that have the qualities of Elegance, Balance, Expressivity (Three "E"s in Italian) Franco was able to create some of the highest expressions of what Piemonte can offer in terms of enological quality.

Franco is the only Italian member of the Académie du Vin de France and since 2003 he has served as President of the Académie Internationale du Vin.

We should write an essay about each of these wines, but we'll focus on there that particularly made me rethink everything I knew about wine so far.

- We started with 43, a method champenoise rosé that takes its name from its liqueur d'expedition: 1943 Bas Armagnac. 65% pinot noir, 35% Chardonnay, it stays on the yeasts for 10 years after aging in barrique.
It's an extremely complex wine with a flowery bouquet that evolves enormously in the glass.
Pro tip: drink it after opening and also keep some in a glass for half an hour. You won't be disappointed.

- Biancofranco: Timorasso is a special grape, recently finding the spotlight after decades of oblivion. I can confidently say that Biancofranco is the best Timorasso I have had the chance to drink. Its complex initial impact unfolds slowly, revealing persistent notes of ripe fruit. On the palate, it is soft and warm, with a remarkable texture and pleasant mineral nuances. Absolutely delightful

- Marasco: This #barolo takes its name from the Marasco cherry, which compose one of the predominant notes on the nose for this wine. On the palate the gentle tannins make it for a very enjoyable experience where hints of rose and violet give it a charismatic and warmth that is hard to explain.

I thank Michele Martinetti for giving me the chance to report on this incredible wine collection. It really provided a new perspective on wine making: his passion and love for the craft of wine making are highly indicative of the family's live for its products.

We provided a selection of wines from different regions, ranging from #Marche and #Abruzzo to #Veneto, #Tuscany and #Piedmont.

We had the pleasure of having Giacomo Sisti @giacomosisti from @umanironchi to attend the event, introducing their amazing #cantina to new audience with wines like the #pecorino amd #montepulcianodabruzzo .

Of course, ham, cheese, salame and melon could not be missed in a night dedicated to Italian Wine.

Thanks to the staff for this fun night with many new friends.

Before flying back to my loved #Turin (last picture) I had a short stay in #Paris and it always shines as one of the most beautiful cities I have been to.

Had the chance to try some french wines and cheese: it's very interesting how Italy and France share so many similarities in these two fields, and yet just by crossing the Alps you can find new experiences and new tastes.

Italians and French always joke about being best and being in a competition on these fields but we have much more in common than we'd like to admit, especially a deep rooted love for enjoying life and its small pleasures.

Visit the world and be free of prejudice.

👨‍🍳Quatri Wines and Chef Filippo's Presentation at Venedia Hong Kong

Venedia restaurant recently hosted an unforgettable evening celebrating the launch of the new Quatri wine collection by @balan.distribution. We were glad to have Fabio Balan, the proprietor of Balan Wines, flying from Italy to present his latest creations paired with a meticulously crafted menu by chef @filippo_ferdinandi

The dinner began with a light and refreshing scallop carpaccio adorned with a watercress salad, delicately drizzled with a touch of fonzu sauce. This exquisite appetizer was complemented by the Cuatri Prosecco Superiore DOCG, its vibrant citrus notes and effervescence cleansing the palate and enhancing the sweetness of the scallops.
A special note: this prosecco has a darker colour than usual, as its made "on the lees", with extended contact with yeasts after fermentation.

Following this, the cavatelli pasta adorned with cuttlefish, bottarga (cured fish roe), and a touch of lime zest, presented a delightful play of savory and bright notes. This dish expertly paired with the Cuatri Verduzzo 2020, a white wine with a touch of sweetness that beautifully balanced the saltiness of the dish, made with a increasingly rare local grape (Verduzzo)

For the main course: black cod nestled on a bed of chickpeas and a vibrant sun-dried tomato paste. This dish's richness was exquisitely counterbalanced by the Cuatri Chardonnay 2021. The wine's notes of ripe stone fruit and a touch of creamy oak flawlessly accentuated the flavors of the cod without overpowering its delicate essence.

The evening concluded with the amazing pork loin glazed, served with a touch of honey mustard sauce, accompanied by slices of crisp Italian red apple. The bold flavors of the pork were expertly complemented by the Vecchio Grion Rosso del Veneto 2018, a full-bodied red wine. A curated selection of delectable cheeses provided a delightful close to this remarkable wine dinner.

A heartfelt thank you to Fabio Balan for sharing his incredible wines with Hong Kong and to Chef Filippo for crafting such a memorable dining experience. We are looking forward dining with the Quatri wines soon again!

As a the new collection of wines "Quatri" by @balan.distribution comes to Hong Kong, we had the chance to try them out at a a fantastic preview dinner at Ritz Carlton's Tosca restaurant.

Placed at the 102F of the ICC, it had a magnificent view of Victoria harbour, and the interiors are equally elegant and refined: truly one of the best environments we experienced in the city!

We were welcomed by warm and experienced Danilo together with their very well prepared staff.

The menu we tried was "Ricordi" (Memories) a five courses meal combining mediterranean and asian ingredients. The Barletta onion Wagyu beef and the blue lobster past were fabulous and instantly among our favourite dishes ever.

Every dish was paired with the new wines: a Prosecco, a Chardonnay, a Verduzzo and a Pinot Grigio. Each Quatri wine has its own defined character with rich bouquets.
With three coming from bio and one from a biodynamic vineyard in the Friuli region, each tells the story of a local production that only makes use of what nature provides without sacrificing the highest quality standards.

Quatri will be soon available in Hong Kong and we will provide more information about these wines in the upcoming posts!
